How to Design a Custom Phone Case: Compare All Five Types

How artwork sits on a real phone case

A phone case is a small canvas with a camera opening that you cannot ignore. The studio image shows print wrapping a physical shell, which is a better guide than a rectangle in an editor. Faces, logos, and dates have to clear that opening and still look right at arm’s length. Buttons, ports, and the camera island are cut out of the print, so a layout that looks complete as a flat file can still fail once those holes appear.

Choose the case construction before you finish the layout. Snap, Tough, and Clear change how much of the phone remains visible and how thick the object feels. MagSafe versions add accessory hardware that can cover the centre of the back. Select the exact device name, including Pro or Max suffixes, then compare this photograph with the live preview for that model. The image here is design inspiration; the designer is where camera position and print boundaries become specific.

Choose the phone model and case type first

Start a custom phone case design by selecting your exact phone model, then choose the case construction that suits how you use it. Artwork placement depends on the camera opening, case shape, and print area, so those choices should come before the final crop.

Tough versus Snap: construction and bulk

The Tough case combines a shock-absorbent TPU bumper with a hard polycarbonate back. Its two-piece construction makes it the option to consider when a protective build is a priority. Leave visual breathing room around the camera opening so the main image does not feel squeezed into the remaining surface.

The Snap case uses a slim, one-piece shell. It suits someone who prioritizes a less bulky shape. A portrait, monogram, or repeating pattern can all work; the construction choice does not require a particular art style.

These are different constructions, not interchangeable model fits. Select your exact device even if another model looks similar, and review the design again whenever you change case type.

Clear cases: include the shell in the composition

The Clear case uses a transparent TPU shell with artwork on an inner film layer. Think about the whole back of the phone, including the clear surroundings, when arranging the image. A centered illustration and a busy photo collage will create very different results.

Check the selected model's preview before relying on any part of the design being transparent. A white area in an image is not the same as transparency, and the final treatment depends on the print setup. Keep important lettering within the defined printable region.

What changes with MagSafe Tough and MagSafe Clear?

MagSafe Tough adds a built-in magnet ring to the Tough construction. MagSafe Clear combines a clear shell and inner printed layer with a magnet ring. Both are designed for magnetic attachment to compatible MagSafe accessories, such as mounts and chargers.

Choose between them based on whether you prefer the Tough build or the clear-shell appearance. Check compatibility for your selected phone and accessory. The ring is an attachment feature; it does not replace the need to choose the correct phone model.

When arranging a name or focal image, think about how a wallet or mount may cover the center of the case during use. With the clear version, also inspect how the ring appears alongside the artwork in the preview.

Prepare the right image size for your phone case

The supplied print specifications use 2,000 × 3,400 pixels for Tough, MagSafe Tough, and Snap artwork. Clear and MagSafe Clear print dimensions vary by phone model, so follow the requirements for the specific model rather than reusing that canvas automatically.

Use a high-quality PNG or JPEG and aim for roughly 300 DPI at the intended print size. A DPI setting alone cannot make a small source photo sharp. Keep the original image, avoid screenshots, and inspect the crop before exporting.

Fill the required print area with your background, while keeping faces, logos, and text safely inside its boundaries. Do not infer print dimensions from a preview image: preview size and production file size serve different purposes.

Work around the camera and keep text readable

Move your main subject away from the camera opening before adjusting the rest of the design. A portrait with extra space above the head is easier to position than a tightly cropped face. For a collage, use fewer, larger images so each remains recognizable.

Place initials or a short name on an uncluttered part of the background. Give fine lettering enough contrast and space. Check the preview at approximately phone size, since lettering that looks large on a desktop canvas can be small in your hand.

Final checks before ordering

• Confirm the exact device model and one of the five case types.
• Check that the artwork dimensions match that type and model.
• Keep essential details clear of the camera opening and outer boundaries.
• Review text, crop, background coverage, and any visible magnet ring.
• Check accessory compatibility if choosing a MagSafe version.
• Review the saved preview after every model or case change.
